Launch of the National Dementia Strategy

  • Catalyst for Change II
    A new resource is now available under the Commissioning Section: A Catalyst for Change is produced to help local authorities and health organisations to improve their strategic commissioning, principally - but not exclusively - of nonacute services for adults and to help them rebalance services to meet compelling new government directions to develop personcentred services. The requirement of this is to put people in receipt of these services more in control of what, how and when they are delivered.
  • A Positive Outlook: Good practice toolkit launched
    This toolkit provides best practice guidance to show what works in reducing the current levels of delayed discharge being experienced by adults and older people in mental health services. It focuses on the practical steps which can be taken to improve discharge.
  • Recipe for Care - Not a Single Ingredient (opens new window)
    A Clinical Case for Change: Reconfiguring our specialist services to bring care closer to home will make a big difference to the lives of older people and their families, according to Professor Ian Philp, National Director for Older People.
  • National Debate On Care Must Give Older People 'Real Choice And Real Voice' In Modernising Care (opens new window)
    Real choice, real voice: older people in control looks at how care services can be reshaped to deliver the goals of the health and social care White Paper Our health, our care, our say. The smarter commissioning of advice, advocacy and information, early intervention, Individual Budgets and Direct Payments, and telecare, the paper argues, are key to delivering the original Independence, well-being and choice vision set out by the Government. The report also discusses the role of the third sector in delivering services, and examines how organisations from all sectors, including private providers, can better meet the needs and aspirations of older people, their families and carers. Recommendations are made for action by central and local government, service providers, and commissioners.
  • Dignity in Care Campaign (opens new window)
    On 14 November 2006, the Minister for Care Services, Ivan Lewis MP launched the first ever Dignity in care campaign. The campaign aims to stimulate a national debate around dignity in care and create a care system where there is zero tolerance of abuse and disrespect of older people. The Dignity in Care initiative has been set up to ensure all older people are treated with dignity when using health and social care services. As well as running a series of events, nationwide, for people to tell us their views we are also keen to find out how you feel about the services you use.
  • New PbR guidance on tariff unbundling for rehabilitation (pdf - 39Kb) (opens new window)
    Payment by results offer the potential to relaesae resources form the tariff paid for acute activity to cover early discharge and support from community services. New guidance from Ian Philp offers clinical advice on how this should be approached and is an important aid to supporting the shift from acute to community services. The CAT team is interested in hearing from communities who have or are planing to use this mechanism.

    The recently published health white paper chapter 6 - Care closer to home - outlines the key messages about shifting more health services out of acute hospitals settings into community locations - notably community hospitals - that are more accessible to the public.
